In 1973 a small group of state legislators and conservative policy advocates met in Chicago to implement a vision: A bipartisan membership association for conservative state lawmakers who shared a common belief in limited government, free markets, federalism, and individual liberty. The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) works to promote the principles of federalism, engage in an ongoing effort to promote Jeffersonian principles, conduct policy making programs that unite the private and public sector, and prepare the next generation of political leadership through educational programs that promote the principles of Jeffersonian democracy, which are necessary for a free society.
