Camp Smile-A-Mile (Camp SAM) was founded in 1985 with one basic goal in mind: to create unforgettable, recreational experiences for young cancer patients from across Alabama at no cost to their families. Our purpose is to provide these children with avenues for fellowship, to help them build self-confidence, to help them cope with their disease and to prepare them for life. Before Camp SAM, many children were not able to go to overnight camp because they were undergoing chemotherapy. Now every child between the ages 6-18 who is a current or former cancer patient, can go to camp through our program. Our programs have expanded to include year-round activities for young cancer patients, their parents and their siblings. More than 400 children have participated in Camp SAM.
