With a vision greater than the imagination, Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded Special Olympics in 1968. Today, Special Olympics reaches more than 1.5 million children and adults with mental disabilities world-wide in some 185 countries. In 1971, Special Olympics Tennessee (SOTN) incorporated as a charitable corporation. By the late 70’s, the program had its roots planted in nearly every community of the state. At the end of 1997, the program was serving more than 15,000 athletes in 30 area programs that encompass all of the state’s counties. Twenty separate sports programs are now offered, and training or competition literally takes place in every month of the year.
