Dating back to 1925, Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) is the nation’s only institution of higher learning that is historically Black and Catholic. The ultimate purpose of the University is the promotion of a more just and humane society. To this end, Xavier offers opportunities in education and leadership development to the descendants of those who had been historically denied the opportunity for higher learning. This preparation takes place in a pluralistic teaching and learning environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including research and community service. XULA enrolls more than 4,100 students with slightly more than half coming from Louisiana, primarily New Orleans.
