Association for Community Television

The Association for Community Television (ACT) is a Houston-based organization formed in December 1969 and charged with three main directives: raise funds for the operation of KUHT-TV, Channel 8; increase public awareness of Channel 8 and its services; and represent the interests of the greater Gulf Coast Community. ACT has raised more than $93 million, making HoustonPBS, Channel 8 a community resource throughout its 33-county Texas Gulf Coast viewing area. ACT also helped raise nearly $16 million to build the LeRoy and Lucile Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting, which is the home of HoustonPBS, KUHT-TV’s, analog Channel 8, KUHT-DT Channel 9, KUHF-FM 88.7, and the University of Houston Center for Public Policy research polling center.
