Founded in 1868, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines has grown to eight branches serving 56,000 individuals through our many programs that build character and assets in kids, strengthen family relationships and promote healthy lifestyles. In addition to offering a wide variety of programs, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines also provides the largest transitional housing shelter in the state. The YMCA works with people of all ages, races and abilities, and no one is turned away due to inability to pay. There are a wide variety of YMCA programs including aquatics, arts and humanities, camping, child care, family programs, health and fitness, older adult programs, sports, teen leadership, and youth and community development.
